The available SOFTWARE are short programs written in Interpiler language (FutureBasic) for Macintoshes Type Powermac, Mac G4/G5 under MacOS up to 9; or in the Interpiler language ZBasic running on PC´s from WIN 95, 98, XP. We are working on the translation into the new KBasic language - see www.kbasic.org. and “IfC-News” in our German sister site www.institut-f-chromatographie.de. The available TEACHWARE are Macintosh HyperCard files of between 50 and 100 pages (or cards) resulting in 10 electronic books for easy learning chromatography and optimizing all single chromatography steps in GC, HPLC and HPTLC / TLC (PLC) with integrated math. software.

This includes:
Sampling statistics (how many samples where to take for a wanted data quality).

- Sampling “hardware” which offers improved sampling (including back flushable mini pre columns, which even prior the inlet to a capillary allow for fast and sharp separation). They avoid an empty pre capillary. They assure a good and long lasting separation system quality.
Chemically reactive “dirt” is sorbed by the pre column packing of 5 to 20 mm length in 1 to 2 mm inner diameter thick walled glass tubes of 60 to 80 mm total length, allows for septum back flush and column - or capillary back flush.
The necessary and simple modification of the inlet systems of commercial GC instruments is shown. This way separation capillaries may get a very long (for commercial reasons too long) life time.

-  Some TEACHWARE HyperCards include detector optimization, column switching, physical selectivity changes and show lots of easy understandable drawings.

-  There are “calculation pages” which treat the entered data life.

-  Many small software packages are applicable upon a mouse click for the calculation of all important chromatography quality data.

HyperCard system software (Apple HyperCard version 2.2) is not included. The user must take care to get the system software from the market.

Example for the content pages in HyperCard: A mouse click onto one selected radio button opens the card side. Indicated by a black spot in the button, it shows this topic (here: Sample preparation and plate preparation) was already selected. On return to this content the user sees, what already was “done”. All movement inside the often up to 100 pages cards is well organized and helps the short time memory.
HyperCard is too good to allow for its loss from the market. Nothing better besides SuperCard followed.

Within the HyperCard material about PLC there are special parts for application, methods, theory and literature.
If it says “easy calculation” than it is really made easy:
“Calculating pages” as given in figures 7 and 8 below - here however for gas chromato - graphy - show the formula, accept data input and need only one click onto the formula to print the result on screen.
Any change can be made and as the calculation effort is just one click, the user learns a lot about the physical and mathematical background.

Gas- and Capillary Gas Chromatography VALIDATION is not only “calculation” but special critical application in which the validation is important. Especially the Environmental Analysis by analytical techniques is something for which the partners need correctness, as this is often connected with quite some penalty money.
The HyperCard materials need often several megabyte memory, so most of the Teachware is stored on USB2 memory sticks. In this environment the SuperCard version of the software runs.

Theoretical materials are supported by lots of graphics in order to show why the critical steps are critical and what must be made in order how to get the job done.
As HyperCard allows to jump from page to page with a completely controlled navigation this helps the user finding his way forward and backward. The  intensity and repetition of working through the material is completely up to him: by direction, speed, combination. But the latter is not only TEACHware, it is also DOware.

The story is not as short as it may look on this figure 5. If there are many steps to be done, the user gets the information by symbols: if hands instead of arrows are seen on the lowest line of a card page this means: click forward and backward again to better understand how to make to install and to apply a back flushable pre column with a mini packing ahead of a separation capillary. This column is easy to exchange or to clean and allows very fast, very sharp trace and main compound peaks.

If there is long(er) text, it can be scrolled in the card window. If one seeks for a word or a number, HyperCard has a fast search mode jumping quickly into a multi page material for the answer and brings it into the window. If there is a computer icon visible, this tells, that there are complete programs available by one click to make life simple for the chromatographer, who most often has NOT a calculator in easy reach or who avoids to pre calculate his waiting time in front of an equipment to see the last peak eluting. Hopefully.

The range of TEACHWARE using HyperCard covers GC, Capillary GC, PLC / HPTLC, HPLC and Micro-HPLC as methods and application areas like instrument modification, Environmental Analysis, special application in the gas- and oil industry besides others. The table of HC programs is shown below.
Although there are PC programs which make HyperCard running on PC´s based on WINDOWS this field has been supported only for a short period of time. Thus Macintoshes are needed for HC.
